SEA: Hey ladies! Come join the womyn's collective.
« on: April 01, 2009, 05:57:14 PM »

I'd put this in the calendar, but apparently only shows are worthy of the punk rock calendar and collectives aren't, so here it goes in general discussion. :)

For those who haven't heard, there's been a new radical womyn's collective started based on DIY, acceptance, empowerment, and education. Discuss DIY health care for womyn, STD care and prevention, feminism and politics, share your ideas and thoughts, vent, and create a safe space for womyn to share and learn.

At the last meeting, which was March 23rd, we talked about lots of awesome stuff, like what feminism is to us, alternatives to birth control, Obama's new council for women & children, domestic abuse facts, and more!  We also talked about what we should call the collective... My vote is still for "Chicks Uncovering New Territory." ;)

The next meeting is at my place on Monday, April 6th at 7 PM.  Meetings will be every other Monday at that time, although we may end up changing the place depending on how people feel about it.

If you're interested, let me know and I can PM you my address!  Hope to see some new and familiar faces this Monday. <3

It's called the "concert calendar."  This is not a concert. :P

I know this, and it's totally awesome.  one day I'm hoping to have a big feminist meeting with dudes invited.  however, this particular collective is just for the ladies.  I know I can talk about my vag with no problem and I'm not modest about anything, but there's some stuff that I don't wanna tell my guy friends! :)

Honest question here.

If this is a group to celebrate female empowerment, why be ashamed to call it a women's collective? Does the Y signify superiority somehow? Is it a Y chromosome reference, making a grab for male testosterone? I would think in an "up with women" group they'd be proud to spell it normally.

Honestly, I wasn't the one who started the women/womyn thing.  I know that some people who identify as female are very sensitive to it, though, and since I'm not one to care, I don't mind defaulting to the minority.

I've noticed at the meetings that no one seems to care about the spelling.  It was something that started at the first meeting from someone who isn't even in Seattle anymore, and since we changed the name anyway to "Chicks Uncovering New Territory" (look at what THAT spells! ha!), it's not really a women/womyn/wimmin thing anymore.

chyeahh.

P.S.  Ladies, meetings are every week now.  So if anyone's interested, talk to me. <3
