I know many of you here already know the greatness of RVIVR but here's my .02:
EASILY the best thing to come out of Olympia maybe ever. And yes, I'm considering the beer when I say that, as well as the incredible 2 1/2 years I spent at Evergreen.
If musical classification is important to you then they are considered pop-punk. To me they are considered a 4 piece [2 guys, 2 gals] that harmonize with their instruments and play to a tight, fast beat while belting out some very inspiring lyrics. I feel that if music could give you a hug and tell you not that things will be ok, but that things will awesome, RVIVR would be the arms that held you.
Their songs are mostly about change and not letting life's daily bullshit get you down. There is a fine tuned dichotomy in the male and female vocals put forth by the two guitar players who have also trained their 6 strings to sing together that, when seen live, creates a beautiful wall of sound. The male vocals are melodic and heartfelt while the female vocals are coarse and raspy and it together it sounds wonderful.
I downloaded their album sometime last year and whenever I listen to it I have to set aside about an hour and a half because I want to listen to it at least 3 times in a row. Last night was the first time I saw them perform and holy shit, it made me love them even more. They played at Swamp House in Olympia that has a huge gnarly tree that fell over quite some time ago but continued to grow around the house until it was a part of the house itself. Outside the ground is soft and marshy, a stones throw from I-5 but shrouded in darkness and soundtracked by what seems like hundreds of frogs surrounding you that you never see. I was finally able to pay for their music last night which for a DIY hand printed LP is a steal for $10. They recycled abandoned LP covers, flipped them inside out and hand printed their artwork on the new surface, so incidentally, I also got a Modest Mouse record cover.
