I run my own D.I.Y. law firm for artists and have been dubbed "The Punk Rock Lawyer" by Mike Park of Skankin Pickle/Asian Man Records.
In short, I am the co-founder of Saku Collins Entertainment and Media Law Group, PLLC, a law practice focusing on providing affordable legal representation and counsel for independent artists and businesses throughout the United States. Our practice covers the protection and negotiation of intellectual property rights pertinent to the entertainment industry, as well as the drafting and negotiation of industry agreements and the development of business entities. We are active in such arts organizations as the Recording Academy, the Intellectual Property section of the King County Bar Association, the Entertainment and Sports Industries division of the American Bar Association, and Washington Lawyers for the Arts.
We work with artists at a very low cost (although we do have student loans to pay off so we cant always be pro bono). A little more about me:
I earned my law degree with honors from Seattle University, where I was Director of the National Lawyers Guild, Editor and Layout Coordinator of The Environmental Law Society Perspectives, and Assistant Editor of The Prolific Reporter. While at law school I was also Music Director and General Manager at KSUB, Seattle University's radio station, and was an active member of The Entertainment and Sports Law Association, The Faculty Standards Hiring Committee, and The Hague Project. I furthermore served as Legal Observer Training Coordinator for the Seattle Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild and law clerk to Hon. Michael C. Hayden of the King County Superior Court. In Spring of 2006 I received the CALI Excellence for the Future Award for Entertainment Law.
I attended Santa Clara University for my undergraduate education, where I received a Bachelor of Arts in History and French & Francophone Studies and a Bachelor of Science in Political Science. I was a member of the Lambda Upsilon Chapter of The Phi Alpha Theta Honors Society. During that time, I was a music editorialist for The Santa Clara and worked at KSCU Radio in many different capacities, including General Manager, Program Director, Promotions Director, and Fundraising Director. I was also a concert promoter and celebrated radio disc jockey, for which I was voted Silicon Valley's Best Disc Jockey of 2001 and Best Local Celebrity of 2002.
I currently do radio shows on KGRG and KSUB and write for various publications/blogs including Vain Magazine, Lubricated Zine, and SeattleSubsonic.com (Seattle's Music Blog).
