Our band Girl Trouble (we are the ones who do the http://www.facebook.com/l/7a532;neverpaytoplay.com site) have received four registered letters that Gorilla Productions is suing us for $25,000 plus damages. No need to offer legal advice (unless you are actually a lawyer in Ohio). We've hired an attorney.

We had to do some soul searching over this. It is a very expensive process. But...Do we give up? Do we stop giving our opinion on pay-to-play? It's my retirement money. Retirement? Or Freedom of Speech? For now, I'm taking the freedom of speech.

We believe that it is important for older bands to give the other side of this practice. We believe that the information we put out might give a new musician a little bit to think about.

I don't understand why Girl Trouble is involved with this crusade.  I assume that the band is from the indie/punk/underground scene and these battle of the bands companies have virtually nothing to do with us.  That's not to defend them, as these Gorilla Productions people are scum--I especially like how the $25k prize was actually a "record deal" with a non-existent label.  Ha!

But hasn't this band been around for nearly 30 years?  And they're STILL dealing with pay-to-play promoters and STILL acknowledging phishing spam from MySpace strangers?  Sheesh.

but then bon von wheelies young nephew formed a band and got suckered in to some of these lame shows.
bon realized there was a buncha these shifty companys popping up taking advantage of young bands & no one was keeping an eye on them.
she got pissed off and decided to do something about it.

I'd be happy to donate something to their legal fund (even to make the case go away costs money). They are playing next Saturday at Grand Illusion in the U-District. I plan on giving them a donation if they ask or not.

I guess I was just too cool for school at a pretty young age, I never fell for a pay-to-play thing. That's all I meant by him being a sap, never said anything about the music he made.
